About database

The web database of commemorative reflections is the result of the solution to the activity „We were before the corona, we will be after it… (March 2020 – present)“, which was financially supported by the program „AV 21 Strategy: Memory in the Digital Age“ (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, 2021).

The content of the database is based on the oral-historical research of the Covid-19 pandemic, which was spontaneously initiated in March 2020 by Miroslav Vaněk and Jana Wohlmuth Markupová. Volunteers from among students and graduates of the follow-up master’s study program Oral History – Contemporary History at the Faculty of Humanities of the Charles University participated in the research.

Individual reflections (including a search option) in the database are available only in the Czech language, due to colloquial Czech. All excerpts from interviews and diaries, or photos, published on this website have been anonymized and have not been edited in any way (unless otherwise stated) and express exclusively the attitudes and opinions of individual witnesses, i.e. they are not the opinion of the researcher of the aforementioned activity. Only some of the recorded interviews were used on this website, all interviews are stored in the Digital Collections of the Oral History Center at the Institute for Contemporary History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The database was created by: Miroslav Vaněk (research design, thematic analysis of diaries), Jana Wohlmuth Markupová (research design, thematic analysis of interviews), Jiří Hlaváček (web design, database systen, embedding, coding and indexing of the content of interviews, diaries and photographs) and Richard Novotný (web design and technical processing).
